1:24000 For distribution through the Maine GIS Internet Data Catalog this dataset is distributed by HUC8 watershed map extent. A list of all twenty-one (21) HUC8 names and numbers is available in a table "HUCLUT", at the Data Catalog "Tables" link. Corresponding 12 digit HUC names and numbers are also included in the table. Three methods of selection are available from the Internet Data Catalog to suit your needs:
1) To obtain a downloadable list of all the HUC8 watersheds use Select by County on HYD24, and select all counties. The result will be by county and include all HUC8 watershed names and numbers with some, but minimum, overlap to choose from for download.
2) If you want to limit your download to a specific hydrography feature use Select by Watershed, which will provide a list of HUC12 names of local features to select from. The result will provide only the corresponding 8 digit HUCs to download.
3) For advanced search and query statewide, download the data layer WBDME6_A. The data layer contains boundaries, name and number attribution for 6, 8, 10, 12 digit HUCs and can be used as an index for each of these levels of watersheds.
Description:
Abstract:
HYD24 depicts Maine's hydrography data, coast, ponds, rivers, streams and hydrography network at 1:24,000 scale. The dataset represents preliminary data from the Maine GIS/USGS National Hydrography Data (NHD) project. Initial stages of the project generated three improved hydrography datasets HYD24L, HYD24P, and HYD24N. HYD24L contains arcs that represent the boundaries of all polygon and double line features. These arcs represent shoreline, coastline, river mouth, associated closure arcs, the state boundary relative to hydrography features, and an offshore limit line. HYD24P consists of polygon and double line features representing ponds, rivers, coast, inland and coastal islands. HYD24N represents a network of hydrography features made up of single line streams both intermittent and perennial, as well as connectors, and artificial paths used to create a network. The Maine GIS ArcInfo library data tiled by 1:24,000 scale quadrangle was used as a compilation source for the Maine NHD hydrography data .
This data was subjected to several processes including edge-matching tiled data and the addition of photo-revised data. A hydrography network was created using the best available digital sources and cartographic judgment. Lines called connectors were added to join existing line features to artificial paths created reduce waterbodies to a network of single line features. Information on flow and direction was evaluated and all arcs were directed downstream. Some New Hampshire and New Brunswick hydrography data and attribution are included.
Purpose: HYD24 may be used as a basemap for Maine hydrography. Data at this scale is suitable for use in local planning and detailed studies.
Supplemental Information:
HYD24L contains attribution that remains undefined. These attributes were part of hydrography line features obtained from New Hampshire, and are both more specific and classified differently than Maine hydrography line features.

Process Step:
Process Description:
The MEGIS hydrography data has historically been stored and managed by 1:24,000 scale quads and ArcInfo Librarian. In the creation of HYD24, ArcInfo Librarian was used to extract the hydrography library layers (streams, ponds, rivers, and coast), append the tiles together, and merge like polygon and arc features. The dataset ME12WBD from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) was used to clip features from the paneled coverage that fell partially or entirely within the 8 digit HUC boundary. Where necessary, the HUC boundary was slightly modified to completely include or exclude features that appeared to incorrectly overlap the boundary. Substantial alterations to the HUC boundary were confirmed on the topographic maps and coded with FM items for NRCS review. DRGCLIPs and MEDOQs were used as a reference to revise the current hydrography data by edge matching between quads and digitizing photo-revised features. Features were modified to the DRGCLIPs and MEDOQs only where compelling evidence of change existed. NWI wetlands were used to confirm connectors through wetlands with none of the existing NWI line work being incorporated into the NHD data. Arcs from the extracted coverages were grouped in order to examine the connectivity of the data set for flow determination. In some cases it was necessary to correct digitizing errors. Using available evidence or cartographic judgment, lines called connectors were added to join features that were deemed to have flow. These features are coded in the item type as "connector". All arcs were directed downstream and the nodes were prepared to help create artificial paths to complete the flow through the hydrography network. A coverage containing hydrography polygon data reduced to a single path, called an artificial path, was combined with the single line stream network to create a drainage network. Artificial paths are coded in the item TYPE as "artpath". The drainage network was grouped again, and each group was directed downstream.

ISLANDS3 data from MDIFW were incorporated into HYD24. This improved depiction of coastal island polygons, added islands monitored by MDIFW (most of which are fully or partially submerged at high tide), added an ISLANDID for each island, and a CIREG indicator. The CIREG indicator identifies each ISLANDID that also represents a CIREG number. USGSNAME represents all island names provided by MDIFW from the federal Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).

Hydrography data updates from new digital raster graphics were obtained from USGS for the following quadrangles: Cross Island, Cutler, Machias Bay, and Moose River. Inland waters depiction was improved with these updates: however, the "new" coastline was not used. The coastline in the new USGS DRGs appeared to have been mapped by a different protocol than "mean high water" previously used for the source COAST. USGS was contacted for documentation. It was decided to utilize the new DRG linework for inland waters hydrography while retaining the source linework from COAST.

Other items in HYD24.AAT are feature metadata FM codes. In HYD24P POLYGON items include ISLANDID, Coastal Island Registry number (CIREG), ELEVATION, USGSNAME, MIDAS, MIDASNAME, PERIMFEET, AREAACRES, LOCALE, HUC12 and TYPE which contains attribution for areas coded estuarine, marine, pond, river, island and submerged. HYD24N contains the ARC items defined in HYD24.NAT. These are coded to describe the TYPE of arc, i.e. artificial path, connector, intermittent or perennial stream. Other items in HYD24.NAT include STRMORDER and feature metadata FM codes.
Entity and Attribute Detail Citation:
The ArcView shapefile and ArcGIS geodatabase formats, commonly used for Maine GIS data, carry default identifiers and attributes that are software generated and/or important for internal recordkeeping. These are listed here to avoid repetition for every layer, and may not be repeated in the attribute descriptions and definitions of each layer. Common software generated identifiers and attributes in Maine GIS data include: FID (feature identifier), Shape (feature geometry), OBJECTID and SHAPE_lengt. In addition, most GIS formats will carry fields for PERIMETER, AREA and/or LENGTH according to feature geometry. These fields are typically available by default, with the units based on coordinate system or projection units of GIS data. Most GIS software packages also provide a means to calculate these values. It is important to test any columns containing PERIMETER, AREA or LENGTH values before using them for analysis purposes. These important values can be carried from format to format and become out-dated. Verify that the values are correct. Also, in your GIS software, please view the properties of data layers for the map units used to calculate these fields, and for the units set for display purposes.

Format Name: ESRI Shapefile
Format Version Number: ARC Version 9.x
Format Specification: ArcView Shapefile Format
Format Information Content:
MEGIS has made all vector layers, in the Maine GIS Internet Data Catalog, available in ESRI's ArcView shapefile format. A shapefile is a simple non-topological format that stores the geometry and attribute information for a set of geographic features as a set of vector (point, line, polygon) coordinates. Shapefiles draw quickly and directly in ArcView, ArcGIS, ArcExplorer. Shapefiles are a compatible data type for many other types of GIS software. Three files are fundamental to each shapefile: .shp stores the feature geometry (shape and location information); .shx stores the index of the feature geometry; .dbf a dBASE (TM) file stores the attribute information for the features. Other index files may be created to help speed analysis and query: these file formats are .sbn .sbx .ain .aix .fbn and .fbx. In addition you may find projection .prj, and metadata .xml, files associated with shapefiles.
