Description:
Abstract:
EHPLVTRN contains Piping Plover and Least Tern nesting, feeding, and brood-rearing areas identified and mapped as Essential Habitat by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW). This dataset contains both LINE and POLYGON topology and both are needed to accurately depict Piping Plover/Least Tern Essential Habitats. LINE attributes include the item LINETYPE, POLYGON attributes include the items SITE, ACRES, TYPE, PHOTO. Field based hyperlinks have been specified in the field PHOTO. These can be activated in ArcMap to display images of the essential habitat areas represented in the dataset. With the data layer visible in the ArcMap table of contents, select Properties/Display, checkmark Hyperlinks and choose the field PHOTO for "Support Hyperlinks using field:".
Purpose:
PLEASE READ! Essential Wildlife Habitats are areas currently or historically providing physical or biological features essential to the conservation of an endangered or threatened species in Maine and which may require special management considerations. As required under the Maine Endangered Species Act, a state agency or municipal government shall not permit, license, fund or carry out projects that will significantly alter an Essential Habitat or violate protection guidelines adopted for the habitat. Landowners, project planners, municipalities or state agencies considering a project in or near an Essential Habitat should immediately contact an MDIFW Regional Wildlife Biologist for assistance.
Essential Wildlife Habitat pertains only to definitions under Maine's endangered species laws (12 MRSA, Chapter 713, Subchapter V, Sections 7754 and 7755-A) and regulations (MDIFW Rules, Chapter 8.05). Information about and mapped locations of other endangered and threatened species habitats, "Significant Wildlife Habitat" (38 MRSA, Chapter 3, Subchapter 1, Section 480-B), rare plants and natural communities, or other important natural resources are not included. For comprehensive information about these resources, please contact the following agencies:

Overview Description:
Entity and Attribute Overview:
This coverage contains locations for 12 Piping Plover/Least Tern nesting, feeding, and brood-rearing areas. Areas identified and mapped as Essential Habitat must have a record of nesting by at least one pair of piping plovers or least terns since 1986 and be considered essential to the achievement of the MDIFW management goals and objectives for piping plovers or least terns. Essential Habitat within the boundary line depicted encompasses portions of the coastal sand dune system and associated coastal wetlands.
Entity and Attribute Detail Citation:
For polygon topology: Areas identified as 'detail' in the attribute TYPE are delineated in more detail on composite aerial photographs. Copies of these photographs are available for viewing at town offices in affected municipalities and Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife offices in Gray, Augusta and Bangor; or they can be viewed and printed from MDIFW's website at http://www.mefishwildlife.com. Photos are also included in the .PDF format of the document ""Essential Wildlife Habitat for Maine's Endangered and Threatened Species"", published by MDIFW that is associated with and accompanies this data set. Areas labeled 'out' in the attribute TYPE are not part of the Essential Habitat.
The ArcView shapefile and ArcGIS geodatabase formats, commonly used for Maine GIS data, carry default identifiers and attributes that are software generated and/or important for internal recordkeeping. These are listed here to avoid repetition for every layer, and may not be repeated in the attribute descriptions and definitions of each layer. Common software generated identifiers and attributes in Maine GIS data include: FID (feature identifier), Shape (feature geometry), OBJECTID and SHAPE_lengt. In addition, most GIS formats will carry fields for PERIMETER, AREA and/or LENGTH according to feature geometry. These fields are typically available by default, with the units based on coordinate system or projection units of GIS data. Most GIS software packages also provide a means to calculate these values. It is important to test any columns containing PERIMETER, AREA or LENGTH values before using them for analysis purposes. These important values can be carried from format to format and become out-dated. Verify that the values are correct. Also, in your GIS software, please view the properties of data layers for the map units used to calculate these fields, and for the units set for display purposes.

Digital Transfer Information:
Format Name: ESRI Shapefile
Format Version Number: ARC Version 9.x
Format Specification: ArcView Shapefile Format
Format Information Content:
MEGIS has made all vector layers, in the Maine GIS Internet Data Catalog, available in ESRI's ArcView shapefile format. A shapefile is a simple non-topological format that stores the geometry and attribute information for a set of geographic features as a set of vector (point, line, polygon) coordinates. Shapefiles draw quickly and directly in ArcView, ArcGIS, ArcExplorer. Shapefiles are a compatible data type for many other types of GIS software. Three files are fundamental to each shapefile: .shp stores the feature geometry (shape and location information); .shx stores the index of the feature geometry; .dbf a dBASE (TM) file stores the attribute information for the features. Other index files may be created to help speed analysis and query: these file formats are .sbn .sbx .ain .aix .fbn and .fbx. In addition you may find projection .prj, and metadata .xml, files associated with shapefiles.
