EAGLEEH contains bald eagle nest sites in Maine mapped as Essential Habitat by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW). The dataset contains attributes for site reference, MDIFW region codes, town(s), US Geological Survey 7.5 minute quadrangle long-names.
Purpose:
PLEASE READ! Essential Wildlife Habitats are areas currently or historically providing physical or biological features essential to the conservation of an endangered or threatened species in Maine and which may require special management considerations. As required under the Maine Endangered Species Act, a state agency or municipal government shall not permit, license, fund or carry out projects that will significantly alter an Essential Habitat or violate protection guidelines adopted for the habitat. Landowners, project planners, municipalities or state agencies considering a project in or near an Essential Habitat should immediately contact an MDIFW Regional Wildlife Biologist for assistance.
Essential Wildlife Habitat pertains only to definitions under Maine's endangered species laws (12 MRSA, Chapter 713, Subchapter V, Sections 7754 and 7755-A) and regulations (MDIFW Rules, Chapter 8.05). Information about and mapped locations of other endangered and threatened species habitats, Significant Wildlife Habitat (38 MRSA, Chapter 3, Subchapter 1, Section 480-B), rare plants and natural communities, or other important natural resources are not included. Entity and Attribute Overview:
EAGLEEH contains nest sites identified and mapped as Essential Habitat. Sites must be within a nesting area occupied in at least one of the three most recent years, and have either a nest that has existed for two consecutive years, or the only existing nest in that nesting area. All boundaries are shown as a solid circular line and the inside of the line is the edge of the boundary. Each circle has a radius of approximately 1320 feet and a center located approximately on the nest. The area within each circle is approximately 126 acres. This coverage contains data for 559 nest locations.
Entity and Attribute Detail Citation:
The ArcView shapefile and ArcGIS geodatabase formats, commonly used for Maine GIS data, carry default identifiers and attributes that are software generated and/or important for internal recordkeeping. These are listed here to avoid repetition for every layer, and may not be repeated in the attribute descriptions and definitions of each layer. Common software generated identifiers and attributes in Maine GIS data include: FID (feature identifier), Shape (feature geometry), OBJECTID and SHAPE_lengt. In addition, most GIS formats will carry fields for PERIMETER, AREA and/or LENGTH according to feature geometry. These fields are typically available by default, with the units based on coordinate system or projection units of GIS data. Most GIS software packages also provide a means to calculate these values. It is important to test any columns containing PERIMETER, AREA or LENGTH values before using them for analysis purposes. MEGIS has made all vector layers, in the Maine GIS Internet Data Catalog, available in ESRI's ArcView shapefile format. A shapefile is a simple non-topological format that stores the geometry and attribute information for a set of geographic features as a set of vector (point, line, polygon) coordinates. Shapefiles draw quickly and directly in ArcView, ArcGIS, ArcExplorer. Shapefiles are a compatible data type for many other types of GIS software. Three files are fundamental to each shapefile: .shp stores the feature geometry (shape and location information); .shx stores the index of the feature geometry; .dbf a dBASE (TM) file stores the attribute information for the features.
