Description:

Abstract:

dirshed depicts watershed areas of surface waters that are active sources of Maine public water supplies, depicted at 1:24000 scale. For river systems, the watershed is arbitrarily truncated .5 mile (0.8 kilometers) upstream of the intake. For lake systems, the direct watershed is truncated at the first order bifurcation of each tributary stream. Watershed delineations for some public water supply surface waters were based on new delineations verified by field work. Data, from the Maine GIS dataset MEDRDVD were used to represent watershed boundaries where these provided the best known representation. When available, the local knowledge of the water supplier was used to adjust the boundaries.

Purpose:

DIRECTWATERSHED watersheds were extracted and modified from other watershed data to facilitate conduct of the source water assessment program. Its primary purpose is to assist in management of spatial information about PWSs in compliance with the federal Safe Drinking Water Act as Amended 1996 and 22 MRSA Chapter 601 Detailed design decisions may require additional locational data. Field verification of location, ownership, and other attributes is strongly recommended.

Access Constraints: These data are freely available for use; however, the data set should not be redistributed without permission. Any secondary distribution must have this documentation appended.
Use Constraints:

Detailed design decisions may require additional locational data. Field verification of location, ownership, and other attributes is strongly recommended. Users must assume responsibility in determining the usability of this data for their purposes. Digital maps retain the accuracy of their source materials. The best use of data mapped at scales of 1:500,000 and 1:250,000 is in statewide planning and studies; at 1:100,000 in regional planning and studies; at 1:62,500 and 1:24,000 in detailed studies and local planning; and at 1:12,000 and 1:5,000 or larger scales in parcel level studies and detailed local planning. In the use of Maine GIS data, please check sources, scale, accuracy, currentness and other available information. Please confirm that you are using the most recent copy of both data and metadata from the Maine GIS Data Catalog. The Maine Office of Geographic Information Systems (MEGIS) provides notice of updates and corrections directly to the Maine GIS Technical Group and to Maine GIS Users, through the MEGISTECH and MEGISUSER list servers. To subscribe please contact the MEGIS technical support line at (207) 287-6144. To request correction of, or provide updates to, Maine GIS data a feedback form is available at http://megis.maine.gov/, or you may contact MEGIS directly. MEGIS is not responsible for local edits to data or metadata. Updates, corrections, and feedback, incorporated in the Maine GIS database are made in accordance with "Data Standards for Maine Geographic Information Systems", 2002, and coordinated by MEGIS in consultation with the Maine GIS Executive Council.

Data Quality Information

Attribute Accuracy:

Attribute Accuracy Report:

Attribute data are extracted from the State Drinking Water Information System (SIDWIS). Although this information is updated and checked for quality purposes on a regular basis, there are errors in the data. Supplies may also be used seasonally, and may not be active. Supplies may go off-line, or be abandoned and the DWP may not be informed of their change in status.

Quantitative Attribute Accuracy Assessment:

Attribute Accuracy Value: good
Attribute Accuracy Explanation: Most attribute data is correct, but there are some data entry errors, and some information is based on owner's recollection, or may not be current.

Logical Consistency Report:

Spatial topology meets "Data Standards for Maine Geographic Information Systems", June 2002. LABELERRORS and NODEERRORS have been resolved. Spatial topology is clean and free of errors. The coverage has been BUILT with polygon topology.

Completeness Report: The data set is complete.
Positional Accuracy:

Horizontal Positional Accuracy:

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: Approximate horizontal accuracy is 12 meters, assuming source data meets National Map Accuracy Standards.

Other Citation Details:

Locations in 1996-2003 were collected using Trimble Geoexplorer Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. Locations in 1991 and 1995 were collected using Trimble Pathfinder GPS Receivers. GPS is a satellite-based positioning system operated and maintained by the U.S. Department of Defense. It consists of 24 NAVSTAR satellites that orbit the earth every twelve hours at an altitude of approximately 12,600 miles, as well as ground-based monitor and upload stations, which track and monitor the satellite orbits, and a master control station. GPS receivers use the signals sent by the satellites to determine where the satellites are and then use this information to calculate the user's position on the earth. Accuracy can range from 1 cm to over 100 meters depending on the number of satellites in view, the position of satellites in relation to each other, the strengths of the satellite signals and the distance of the base station from the GPS receiver. Geoexplorers typically provide accuracy ranges of 2 to 5 meters. Locations have been mapped using the North American Datum 27 (NAD27) later converted to NAD83 in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinate system.

Digital Transfer Information:

Format Name: ESRI Shapefile
Format Version Number: ARC Version 9.x
Format Specification: ArcView Shapefile Format
Format Information Content:

MEGIS has made all vector layers, in the Maine GIS Internet Data Catalog, available in ESRI's ArcView shapefile format. A shapefile is a simple non-topological format that stores the geometry and attribute information for a set of geographic features as a set of vector (point, line, polygon) coordinates. Shapefiles draw quickly and directly in ArcView, ArcGIS, ArcExplorer. Shapefiles are a compatible data type for many other types of GIS software. Three files are fundamental to each shapefile: .shp stores the feature geometry (shape and location information); .shx stores the index of the feature geometry; .dbf a dBASE (TM) file stores the attribute information for the features. Other index files may be created to help speed analysis and query: these file formats are .sbn .sbx .ain .aix .fbn and .fbx. In addition you may find projection .prj, and metadata .xml, files associated with shapefiles.
