Description:
Abstract:
CONTOURS_2FT contains 2 foot interval contour lines for the coastal areas of York and Cumberland Counties from Old Orchard Beach to Harpswell. The contour lines were one of several data sets created from LiDAR collected in November 2006 by the Sanborn Map Company.
Purpose:
The Contours were originally derived from the LiDAR data sets, including Bare Earth and a Gridded DEM support Camp Dresser and McKee's continued development of updated Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps and flood insurance studies for coastal areas located in Cumberland and York Counties, Maine. The contours were created primarily for determining areas of potential flooding. They are also useful to determine drainage, for hydrology studies, for determining slope and for delineating watersheds.

Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report:
Attribute accuracy is expected to be good, however, due to the large number of arcs, elevation codes are spot checked from a representative sample. Please report any elevation coding errors to the Maine Office of GIS
Logical Consistency Report: Spatial topology is clean and free of errors. The coverage has been BUILT to LINE and has ARC topology.
Completeness Report: Data set is complete.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: Approximate horizontal accuracy is 2 meters, assuming source data meets National Map Accuracy Standards.
Quantitative Horizontal Positional Accuracy Assessment:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Value: 2
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Explanation:
MEGIS has limited information on how this data were created. Given the contour interval and the fact that the vertical accuracy is stated to adhere to National Map Accuracy Standards, we are assuming a corresponding level of horozontal accuracy. Then 90% of points sampled would fall within 2 meters of theri true position on teh ground.
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report: The vertial accuracy of the source data meet or exceed vertical National Map Accuracy Standards for 2-foot contour mapping.
Quantitative Vertical Positional Accuracy Assessment:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Value: 1
Vertical Positional Accuracy Explanation: Not more than 10% of the elevations tested would be in error by more than 1/2 of the contour interval or 1 foot.

LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is an optical remote sensing technology that measures properties of scattered light to find range and/or other information of a distant target. In this time period it is one of the more accurate means of determining elevation accurately by remote sensing. Sanborn Map Company furnished the collection, processing, and development of LiDAR for 584 square miles in Maine (215 square miles in York County, 369 square miles in Cumberland County) to support the FEMA Region 1 Map Modernization. All data was acquired during November 2006.
Process Step:
Process Description:
Using the Leica ALS-50 Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) system, flight lines were planned for standard density 1.4 meter GSD. The Flight plan for the project includes the following specifications to fully meet the project requirements - single pass density of approximately 1.4 square meters per sample * Swath width ~688 meters * Flight altitude 1200 meters * flight line spacing ~516 meters with ~125 meters overlap *Scan Frequency- 36 Hz *Scan Angle- 16 degrees * Aircraft ground speed -- 120 knots * System Calibration pre and post mission * Two GPS base stations within 30 KM. Multiple returns were recorded for each laser pulse along with an intensity value for each return. The data are calibrated for geographic referencing. Points are further processed, using TerraSolid? software, to classify return values. The first and last return data is filtered to remove the vegetation and above ground manmade features to yield a ground surface. The Bare Earth was then used to produce a 6' GRID DEM and a TIN. Independent checkpoint were used to validate the overall surface accuracy and have been provided and documented in a Lidar Acquisition Report.

Overview Description:
Entity and Attribute Overview:
The Terrain data package is made up of several data themes containing primarily spatial information. These data supplement the Elevation datasets by providing additional information to aid flood risk evaluation and flood hazard area delineations
Entity and Attribute Detail Citation:
The ArcView shapefile and ArcGIS geodatabase formats, commonly used for Maine GIS data, carry default identifiers and attributes that are software generated and/or important for internal recordkeeping. These are listed here to avoid repetition for every layer, and may not be repeated in the attribute descriptions and definitions of each layer. Common software generated identifiers and attributes in Maine GIS data include: FID (feature identifier), Shape (feature geometry), OBJECTID and SHAPE_lengt. In addition, most GIS formats will carry fields for PERIMETER, AREA and/or LENGTH according to feature geometry. These fields are typically available by default, with the units based on coordinate system or projection units of GIS data. Most GIS software packages also provide a means to calculate these values. It is important to test any columns containing PERIMETER, AREA or LENGTH values before using them for analysis purposes. These important values can be carried from format to format and become out-dated. Verify that the values are correct. Also, in your GIS software, please view the properties of data layers for the map units used to calculate these fields, and for the units set for display purposes.
