Description:
Abstract:
GEOCODES is a table that lists standardized names and unique identifiers for Maine minor civil divisions and reservations, which represents the first official Standard Geographic Code endorsed and adopted by the Governor of Maine, on July 1, 1971. Geocodes have undergone subsequent revisions, all of which were "officially" rolled back to this 1971 list by Maine's Information Services Policy Board (ISPB), as of January 2000. In 1971, all Maine state agencies were requested to implement these five digit geocodes, in agency information systems, to build a base of data for Maine and to promote data sharing. Fields include: COMMONNAME, COUNTY, GEOCODE, STATUS, CODE1982, CODE1971, NOTES. The first two digits of the geocode represent the federal code (FIPS55-3) for Maine counties, the remaining three digits were assigned by Maine to uniquely identify each of Maine's MCDs and Reservations. As an information service to state agencies and the public, and in cooperation with the Maine State Planning Office, these "official" geocodes for Maine, are now maintained, updated and made available through the Maine Office of Geographic Information Systems (MEGIS). Periodic revision is necessary to reflect changes that occur, for example incorporation of a new minor civil division in 1998 required the addition of a new geocode. All fields are data type TEXT.
Purpose:
The table provides unique identifiers and standardized names for Maine minor civil divisions and reservations. The table is used in the Maine GIS Data Catalog for the "Select by Town" and "Select by County" picklists.

Digital Transfer Information:
Format Name: ESRI Shapefile
Format Version Number: ARC Version 9.x
Format Specification: ArcView Shapefile Format
Format Information Content:
MEGIS has made all vector layers, in the Maine GIS Internet Data Catalog, available in ESRI's ArcView shapefile format. A shapefile is a simple non-topological format that stores the geometry and attribute information for a set of geographic features as a set of vector (point, line, polygon) coordinates. Shapefiles draw quickly and directly in ArcView, ArcGIS, ArcExplorer. Shapefiles are a compatible data type for many other types of GIS software. Three files are fundamental to each shapefile: .shp stores the feature geometry (shape and location information); .shx stores the index of the feature geometry; .dbf a dBASE (TM) file stores the attribute information for the features. Other index files may be created to help speed analysis and query: these file formats are .sbn .sbx .ain .aix .fbn and .fbx. In addition you may find projection .prj, and metadata .xml, files associated with shapefiles.

Ordering Instructions:
At its May, 2004 meeting, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission initiated the GeoArchives records access project by funding a grant to:
1) create standards in order to designate a select set of Maine State Geographic Information System (GIS) records as archival,
2) develop, in partnership with the GeoLibrary, an internet-based GeoArchives system prototype, and implement it for a selected set of archival GIS records, and
3) amend Archives Advisory Board, GeoLibrary, and Information Services Policy Board rules to recognize and enforce the implementation of the new standard(s) and prototype throughout Maine government.
For information on project development see http://www.maine.gov/geoarch/ .
